MATCHES START 58
Children to Compete for the National Title by The Marbles Editor WILDWOOD, N.J.: 32 boys and 29 girls, each having competed in their hometown marble championships preliminaries, began play here Monday morning at the 80th anniversary of the National Marbles Tournament.
Two photos of Ringer Stadium- June 16, 2003. This is the first day of the National preliminaries, leading to the Championship matches on Thursday.
At 9:00 A.M. sharp, under cloudy skies, temperatures at 60 degrees,
strong winds and the occasional drizzling rain, the annual mib championship of
the United States got off to a chilly start. In the lead for the boys are Mike Ashwood, 14, of Gunnison, CO and Kevin Eisentrout, 11, of Mountaineer, WV each earning a share of the top spot with an impressive 8 wins and 1 loss record or 0.889% . Melissa Ashwood, 11, of Gunnison, CO. is the runaway leader for the girls with a perfect score of 7 wins and 0 loss record or 1.000 % .
The Ashwood family of Colorado must be mightily pleased with their children’s
performance at Ringer Stadium today. This brother / sister team will be closely
watched by fans of the mib kings’ sport. The foul weather and gusting winds blowing off the cold Atlantic Ocean caused havoc for referees and tournament officials at Ringer Stadium. The little glass mibs are easily encouraged to cross the ring line by the wind, adding up points for the lucky mibster who happens to be knuckling down during a gust. A mibster with the wind at his back can legitimately claim all the mibs helped out of the ring by the wind.

The “Wind Rule,” was often put into play today. This is where tiny hands are
allowed to cup, but not touch, a spinning shooter to keep the wind from pushing
a shooter over the ring-line. If their shooter crosses the ring-line, for
whatever reason, their turn is over.
Tuesday, the weatherman promises almost a mirror of today’s weather.
Cloudy, more wind, chance of rain, but the temperature might reach a balmy 70
degrees. And, that’s generally the forecast for the entire tournament. Moms
and Dads won’t have to worry about sunburns on their little ones this year. Tuesday Wednesday Thursday |
